Artist Yoshua Okón, currently in residence at Denniston Hill, will speak about his multidimensional, politically engaged practice with ICI’s Renaud Proch and artist and co-founder of Denniston Hill, Paul Pfeiffer.
Okón will discuss his project, MIASMA,developed with curator Edgar Alejandro Hernandez at the invitation of the speculative, non-profit art space testsite in Austin, Texas. This project, further developed during Okón's residency at Denniston Hill, explores covert operations of cultural infiltration by the United States government in Mexico. Okón will speak about the ongoing research for the project, which included revisiting the documents of art critic José Gomez Sicre, director of visual arts at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington D.C. and his relationship with art historian Alfred Barr.
Yoshua Okón was born in Mexico City in 1970 where he currently lives. His work, like a series of near-sociological experiments executed for the camera, blends staged situations, documentation and improvisation and questions habitual perceptions of reality and truth, selfhood and morality. In 2002 he received an MFA from UCLA with a Fulbright scholarship. His solo shows exhibitions include: Salò Island, UC Irvine, Irvine; Piovra, Kaufmann Repetto, Milan; Poulpe, Mor Charpentier, Paris; Octopus, Cornerhouse, Manchester and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles and SUBTITLE, Städtische Kunsthalle, Munich. His group exhibitions include: Manifesta 11, Zurich; Gwangju Biennale, Korea; Antes de la resaca, MUAC, Mexico City; Incongruous, Musèe Cantonal des Beux-Arts, Lausanne; The Mole´s Horizon, Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels; Mercosul Biennial, Porto Alegre; Amateurs, CCA Wattis; San Francisco; Laughing in a Foreign Language, Hayward Gallery, London; Adaptive Behavior, New Museum, NY and Mexico City: an exhibition about the exchange rates between bodies and values, PS1, MoMA, NY, and Kunstwerke, Berlin. His work is included in the collections of Tate Modern, Hammer Museum, LACMA, Colección Jumex and MUAC, among others.
Renaud Proch is Independent Curators International (ICI)’s Executive Director, and from December 2009 to March 2013, he served as ICI’s Deputy Director. Prior to this he was the Senior Director at the Project in New York, as well as the Director of MC, in Los Angeles. Originally from Switzerland, Proch studied in London, and moved to the West Coast of the U.S. in 2001. He co-founded ART2102 of Los Angeles in 2003, a non-profit organization that realized projects by artists and curators on- and off-site; and the backroom in 2005, a growing artists’ archive and itinerant research-oriented project presented in five cities in the U.S., Mexico and France. In 2011, he co-curated with Khwezi Gule a retrospective of South African artist Tracey Rose for the Johannesburg Art Gallery, South Africa, and the Umea Bildmuseet, Sweden, which also traveled to the Nikolaj Kunsthal, in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Paul Pfeiffer is a New York-based artist. He has had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art (2001), MIT’s List Visual Arts Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2003), the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2005), MUSAC León, Spain (2008), the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2009), the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo (2010), Sammlung Goetz, Munich (2011), the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Manila (2015). He has received numerous awards and fellowships, including a Fulbright-Hayes Fellowship and the Bucksbaum Award from the Whitney Museum. He received his BFA in Printmaking from San Francisco Art Institute and received his MFA from Hunter College in New York. He is currently in residence from 2016-18 as Honorary Chair of the Lamar Dodd School of Art, University of Georgia, Athens, where he is bringing Yoshua Okón as part of a two-year program of visiting lecturers.
